Because we breed chickens to grow so fast and so large, cartilage and scars build up inside of their bodies. Many birds die from being unable to lift themselves up to drink water, or from their heart and lungs being unable to support their growth rate.
Many chickens will live their entire lives standing in their own feces because the shed will not be cleaned.
There have been multiple accounts of chickens missing the blade meant to cut their throats and therefore being boiled alive. It happens often enough that there is a name for this - "red birds", for the colour their blood still being in their bodies gives them. [So far I have come to understand this from an in-person conversation with an ex-slaughterhouse worker.]
