Appeals to Nature

PreviousTu QuoqueNextAnimals Eat Animals

Last updated 1 year ago

An appeal to nature is an argument that implies it is ethical because it is natural. This is informally fallacious. There are many horrific things that occur in nature - infanticide and rape, for example, are natural phenomena. The vast majority of people do not honestly believe that these phenomena are ethical, therefore appeals to nature are fallacious within those people's own ethical frameworks. Unless someone genuinely believes that all natural phenomena including rape and infanticide are ethical, they cannot point to an action being natural as proof that it is ethical. Those who argue appeals to nature are generally relying on the rhetorical, persuasive value of 'natural' being a loaded-term that is often associated with health and normalcy. Ethical philosophers have argued that what is natural is descriptive, not prescriptive. In other words, just because something is a certain way does not necessarily mean it ought to be that way. Just because we see others do something, doesn't mean we should replicate their behaviour.
