Nickel is not an essential nutrient. It is used in trace amounts by the body, but even complete deficiency in it causes no health issues, so it is not essential.
Nonetheless, getting nickel in your diet in small amounts may be beneficial. Nickel may assist in iron absorption and in some chemical reactions throughout the body. Sources of nickel are primarily from plants which absorb it from the soil. Vegan food groups containing nickel include legumes, nuts, and oats.
