๐Ÿง‚Iodide

Iodide is an essential trace nutrient and a mineral. It is a form of the base element iodine. The form the body absorbs is iodide ions.

Iodide is found in fortified table salt (it will say "iodized" on the front) along with the other essential mineral nutrients sodium and chloride. Because table salt is often iodized and because we consume so much table salt already, it is not typically a dietary concern. Our bodies cannot produce iodide on their own, so it's an essential nutrient. It's used to make thyroid hormones. These hormones control the body's metabolism and many other important functions. The body also needs thyroid hormones for proper bone and brain development during pregnancy and infancy. The currently accepted minimum daily intake requirement for iodine is 150 micrograms (mcg). Pregnant and lactating women should consume 220 and 290 mcg respectively.
